Kindness Counts: Paying it Forward
We have amazing students at Pacific Heights who are doing all they can to make the world a better place. Two of these students are Anjili and Olivia (grade 3). During one of their play dates Olivia was telling Anjili about how she drew and sold her artwork to neighbours. She did this to help the families who were impacted by the forest fires this summer. From this conversation the girls became inspired and decided to fundraise money for cancer research.
Both girls came to speak to Ms. Chohan one day at school with a plan. They wanted to sell bookmarks and all proceeds would go to cancer research. The girls were thoroughly organized with order forms and they went to each class in the school to talk about their fundraiser. The girls demonstrated commitment and passion as they spent at least three weekends and many days after school making bookmarks. The girls raised $300! Thank you Anjili and Olivia – your efforts are changing the world.
Ammar Khan is a grade 7 student who is an active participant on the Leadership Team. He became inspired after attending the ME to WE Day at Rogers Arena. So inspired he read the book, “Me to We: Finding Meaning in a Material World”. After reading the book, Ammar realized that people go through tough situations. He started noticing how many people go hungry and the help that is needed at shelters. When driving in a heated car with plenty of snacks he noticed the homeless needing food, shelter, and warmth. So he decided to do something about it. He went around his neighbourhood and collected canned food for the Sources Food Bank in South Surrey.
Ammar says he can’t put into words the feeling he had donating the food but he definitely realized that “getting something – you feel good, but giving something – you feel even better”. At the same time he realized there is so much more to do. He is going to keep up his efforts because he has seen the ripple effect. One of his neighbours saw what Ammar did and also decided to do a food drive. Thank you Ammar, your efforts will most definitely contribute to making the world a kinder place.
A huge shoutout to our Girls Basketball team for winning the play day! The girls demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and teamwork. They were on the court encouraging each other, making sure everyone on the team got a basket. We are so proud of them.
We did not have a boys basketball team this year but instead had boys basketball intramurals. The boys did participate in a play day and did well. The highlight of the boys play day was Armaan Binpal – he won the 3 point shooting contest! Well done, Armaan.
A big thank you to our coaches for giving up their lunch hours, coming to early morning practises, and travelling to other schools after school for games. Our coaches and kept team spirit with player development as the focus. Thank you to Kul Chong (parent coach for the girls team), Mr. Henderson and Ms. Beale.
Gourmet Cookie Dough Fundraiser
This Spring we have decided to do a quick and easy fundraiser to raise money to support our student learning programs. With our growing school populations we need to purchase items for our coding club, PE department, and we need to replace and purchase technology. We would like to have another laptop cart so our intermediate classes have more opportunity to use laptops for research and other projects. We would also like to have at least 3 iPads in each classroom that are available for student use. We are hoping that you and your family participate so we can make this fundraiser a collective success. This fundraiser will require some effort but should be very easy.
The fundraiser is the Gourmet Cookie Dough Fundraiser. The cookies are made by the same company that makes Subway cookies. The cookies are very convenient as they come frozen and pre portioned. The cookies can go right from the freezer to the oven – no thawing, scooping or clean up. There are 36 pre portioned cookies in a box and there are 6 flavors to choose from that you will sell for $17.00 per box. We also have a Variety Muffin tray! Each Tray has 15 Large 4 oz muffins, which you just thaw and serve. Each Muffin comes individually plastic wrapped making it perfect for lunches. Each tray sells for $20.
In order to make this a successful fundraiser, we are hoping each student/family can sell 10 boxes of cookies. Please start thinking of 5 people that you know and ask them to support our school by purchasing 2 boxes. You can sell as many as you wish but with minimal effort 10 boxes should be easy.
The order form you will receive on March 7th is simple and easy to use. Please be sure to fill out the forms completely and correctly. All order forms and money must be turned in no later than April 12th. The delivery will be in early May. Cheques should be payable to Pacific Heights Elementary. Please do not add any taxes to the prices as taxes are already included.
We have also added special prizes for your hard work:
- When you sell 5 boxes of cookies you will be entered into the draw for a $10 Menchies gift card. There will be 10 draws. Earn an extra entree for every 5 cards sold. So the more you sell the more chances you have to win.
- The top three Sellers will also win a gift card- you can choose your gift card from either Chapters, Sport Check or Mastermind Toys:
- 1st Place $100
- 2nd Place $50
- 3rd & 4th place $25
- The top Classroom in sales will win a pizza party
PH Kids Got Talent!
The Talent Show will take place after Spring Break on April 19th at 1 pm.
Talent show auditions will take place March 6 – 9th during the lunch hour in the Multipurpose Room. Students are encouraged to think outside the box when thinking about a performance. In the past we have had students perform comedy acts, dancing, singing, martial arts, and gymnastics.
March 6 – Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2
March 7 – Grade 3, Grade 4
March 8 – Grade 5, Grade 6
March 9 – Grade 7
If you have any questions, please talk to Ms. Chohan.
We Bake for Change
Kenya and Water
This year our leadership team has decided to support Kenya. Our goal is to raise money so villages in Kenya have access to clean water and sanitation. Clean water helps remove barriers to education by reducing illness and allowing girls to go to school instead of spending hours each day fetching their family’s water – often from contaminated sources. Click here to learn more.
Our first big fundraiser this year is “We Bake for Change”. Student leaders will be baking cupcakes and selling them for a $2.00 on Thursday, March 8th. Students are only allowed to purchase one cupcake. If your child would like to purchase a cupcake please send $2 with your child to give to his/her classroom teacher. If we have extra cupcakes left over, then they will be sold after school; parents can purchase for their children or themselves.
- Our leadership team is also helping our local community. We have already supported our local food bank with our “We Scare Hunger” campaign. Our school community collected 517 non perishable food items.
- Our student leaders put together winter hampers for families in need during the winter break. The students went out shopping and purchased clothing and toys for the children of 4 different families. It felt so good to give during the holiday season!
- We collected warm, clean blankets to provide some respite from the cold for people who are forced to live out on the streets.
