A big thank you to all of our students who fundraised.  The school made $6138.00 from this fundraiser. Cookie pick up will be on May 10th after school.  Remember, we do not have a deep freezer at our school where we can store the frozen cookies that did not get picked up.  If you are unable to make pick up on May 10th please ask another parent from the school to pick up your order.

drillEarthquake Drill

We will be having an Earthquake Drill on May 17th at 1 pm.  Children and all staff will evacuate the school and wait outside on the big field until a designate on the Emergency Contact Card comes to pick up your child.  Parents will be able to pick up their children anytime after 1:30pm during the drill.  There will be a process we following during this drill:

-where children wait on the big fied
-how children are signed out the designated adult
-setting up of tarps and other equipment, depending on circumstances, that will happen during a real natural disaster

Thank you to all the parents who have handed in the Emergency Contact Cards.  These cards will be placed in the classroom emergency backpack. If an emergency should happen while you are out of the neighbourhood, school staff will remain with your child(ren) for as long as necessary. Your child(ren) will only be released to you and to anyone that you designate on the Emergency Contact Card. It is best if the adults on the list live nearby and can walk to school to pick up your child in your absence. The purpose of this is both to reunite you as soon as possible, and to keep your child safe. When a person comes to pick up your child, they will have to identify themselves and your child will have to confirm their identity.

Therapy/Service Dog News

dogA student at our school will be introducing us to his therapy dog, Hughey, during an assembly on Wednesday, May 9th.  Hughey is a Labrador Retriever and is 2.5 years old. We encourage parents to attend this assembly for more information or to ask any questions.  During this assembly the dog trainer, Sarah Clarke, will share the do’s and dont’s of a therapy dog in a school (i.e.when the dog is wearing it’s vest you are not to pet it).  Many questions the students have will also be answered:

What is Hughey’s job?
What does Hughey do in a school?
Where does the dog go to the washroom?
Which classroom or room will Hughey most likely be resting or working?
Who is responsible for Hughey?

If your child has a dog allergy we should be aware of, please contact Ms. Chohan.

Learning Commons

There are a log of fun things happening in our Learning Commons.  Students have been using Green screen technology to superimpose images of themselves over a background of their choice.  Here is a fun example that students in Ms. Banbury’s class did:

Our Reading Link Challenge team called the Flaming Taco Bookinators made it all the way to the third round of challenge.  A big shout out to the Flaming Taco Bookinators Nevada Magnusson, Taylor Wegner, Snow Yan, Jessica Schouten, Lily Zembik, and Sydney Johal.  We are so proud of their dedication, teamwork and enthusiasm.  They displayed a high level of intensity and commitment prepping for the competition.

Sports

Track and Field

UnknownOur students have been working hard and attending practises.  The athletes are excited for the upcoming mini meets taking place at the South Surrey Athletic Park.  If your child is attending the mini meet please ensure he/she is dressed appropriately for the weather.  Students need to bring water, sunblock (to reapply), hat, and snacks (in case the event runs long).  Parents please be available for pick up between 4 – 6 pm.

bballMr. Henderson put together a boys basketball team for our grade 5’s.  The boys practised for a tournament that was being held at Rosemary Heights.  We are proud to announce that our boys finished in first place!  Well done.
