Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to you and your family. As we are all set for 2018, the staff at Pacific Heights Elementary would like wish our students and families a year of happiness, good health, and much success. At Pacific Heights we will continue to aim high in our learning goals and keep paying it forward as we continue to spread #kindnesscounts to one another. We look forward to the shared learning successes we will experience with our students during events like Maker Faire, First Peoples in Residence Week, Talent Show, Spring Concert, sporting events, coding, reader’s theatre, and so much more!
New Staff Members
As many of you already know, Mr. Thompson has been appointed as Vice Principal at Bonnocord Elementary. So that means we have the pleasure of welcoming Ms. Sandhu to our school community – Ms. Sandhu is the new grade 7 teacher for division 1. We would also like to welcome Ms. Swartz, who is a new EA on our staff.
Ruben’s Shoes
For the month of January our school community is continuing to pay if forward by supporting Ruben’s Shoes. In countries like the Dominican Republic, children are unable to go to school because they have no shoes to wear. Adults in some of these countries have difficulty going to job interviews because they do not own a pair of shoes. Please donate your gently used shoes to help families in need.
Each of our classrooms has a box for shoe collection. Take a look through your closet and donate those shoes that your children have outgrown and shoes that you no longer wear. Give your shoes a second life and someone in need a new beginning.
Canadathon
Canadathon is a learning fundraiser our students participate in to raise classroom funds. These funds are used by teachers to pay for learning field trips, classroom libraries and other learning resources. The students will be coming home this week with a study sheet that contains questions and answers about Canada. Attached to the study sheet is a pledge sheet. We encourage parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles (and other family members) to place pledges.
Each classroom and/or grade level will have a different date as to when the test is administered. Pledges will be collected before the end of January. Our designated classroom parents will help with the marking of the tests.

What is Maker Faire?
Maker Faire is part science fair, part country fair and part something entirely new. Maker Faire features innovation and experimentation across the spectrum of science, engineering, art, performance and craft. Maker Faire is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, and students. All of these “makers” come to Maker Faire to show what they have made and share what they have learned. It’s a chance for students to show others an area they are really interested in. It can be anything from baking to robots, exploding volcanoes to doll dresses. If you can make it with your hands and it’s something original, then it fits in Maker Faire.
Schedule of Events:
Wednesday, January 31st: students will be given the opportunity to create their project. Please ensure your child has the supplies he/she needs to build his/her project.
Thursday February 1st: students will be displaying their work in the gym, multi-purpose room and throughout our halls.
**Note: If there are any parent “Makers” who would like to display their work as well, please contact Ms. Chohan by email or phone.
Viewing Schedule:
The staff is still working on this schedule. We will have more information about parent viewing next week.
Parent Volunteers:
Please contact your child’s classroom teacher if you would like to volunteer on Wednesday, January 31st to assist student makers in the class. Please note, that if you are volunteering it is to assist all other students not only your child.
If you have any other questions, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.
