Learning Spotlight

This month has been busy with classes building their gravity cars and racing them down the track.  I will have more pictures to share in the next couple of weeks as some classes are still building.  Take a look at the photos and videos below to see some of the fun learning that has taken place.

Student Leadership News

Kenya and Water

This year our leadership team has decided to support Kenya.  Our goal is to raise money so villages in Kenya have access to clean water and sanitation.  Clean water helps remove barriers to education by reducing illness and allowing girls to go to school instead of spending hours each day fetching their family’s water – often from contaminated sources.  Click here to learn more.

Local Impacts

  1.  Our leadership team is also helping our local community.  We have already supported our local food bank with our “We Scare Hunger” campaign.  Our school community collected 517 non perishable food items
  2. We are also excited about supporting local families during this Holiday season.  Our students will be helping three families by putting together hampers full of clothing, toys, and games.
  3. Apart from supporting important global initiatives and building school spirit, one of the most important mandates of our Student Leadership Team is to make our own community a better place to live. With that idea in mind, we are hoping to collect as many warm, clean blankets as we can to provide some respite from the cold for people who are forced to live out on the streets. If you have a blanket to donate, please send it in a bag to your child’s classroom teacher. Members of the leadership team will come around and collect the blankets by Tuesday, December 12, 2018. The blankets will then be delivered to a local shelter.

School Spirit with a Fundraising Twist

We are having a theme day: Disney Day is this Wednesday November 22nd.  Come to school dressed as your favourite Disney character.  Our student leaders will be coming around to take pictures.

movemberHappy MO-vember! If you have been paying attention to the faces of our male teachers this month, they have decided to show their support for men’s health by growing Mo’s (moustaches). Movember started in 2004, in Melbourne, Australia, when a group of friends decided to grow moustaches for men’s health. The goal is to make the men in our school community (dads, uncles, granddads, older brothers) more aware of the importance of seeing a doctor on a regular basis. You can find more information about Movember at this website.
From Monday, Movember 27th to the 30th, we are going to have a 4 day fundraising blitz. Our goal is to raise $800 over the 4 days to support men’s health. On Thursday, Movember 30th, we are having a  Moustache Day theme day. On this day we will celebrate what we have fundraised over four days by having everyone wear a moustache style of their choice! There will also be a Movember Art Contest for all students to participate in which is being led by our Pacific Heights Leadership Team. There will be more information to follow regarding the art contests later this week.
If you would like to donate on-line, you can find the Pacific Heights’ MO BRO’s team here. Any donation helps, however, getting the word out to our adult males is the most important reason for this campaign.
