This has been a wonderfully exciting week at Pacific Heights! The creatures arrived for our Sea-Aquarium, some classes visited the Hazelmere Pumpkin Patch, while others explored Redwood Park. Our week culminated with Halloween festivities on Friday: a primary Halloween dance and costume parade for everyone.

The tractor hay ride. Love the mud!
Sea-Aquarium Critter Arrival
The new critters arrived by courier on Wednesday after students spent a great deal of time learning about the different creatures that could be ordered. Students submitted a wish list and waited patiently for the day of delivery. The excitement was palpable as the boxes were opened and each creature was revealed. Students from many classes took part in group table work identifying, and making observations of our new critters. At the end of the day, all of the critters found a new home in the tank in our foyer. Be sure to come by and take a look!
Each critter arrived in packing and was revealed one by one.
Redwood Park Exploration
Students in Grade 3 visited Redwood Park this week for a nature exploration.
Primary Dance and Halloween Costume Parade
Today was an eventful day. Students full of excitement, arriving to school in costume. Our primary students had a Halloween dance in the gym, just for them. All students danced the halls and gym during our Halloween parade this afternoon. Fun was had by all!
There is always lots going on in the hallways of Pacific Heights. Here are some of the highlights from this week.
Patterning work in Grade three. Students had to create a pattern and then explain their work.
Hailey and Amy were challenged to create a lamp shade to fit a lamp that Mr. Unruh made out of recycled parts.
Students in grade three have been studying the art of Barbara Reid. Barbara Reid works with plasticine to create the art for her books. I even had the opportunity to read one of my favourite Barbara Reid books to the class….The Party! Students then had a chance to create their own works of art out of plasticine.
We are very excited to add a new piece of technology to Pacific Heights. We now have a 3D printer! I can’t wait to see what our students create!
I was walking down the hall this week and saw a crowd of very excited students in grade two. I discovered they had a visitor. Griffin had brought in his veiled chameleon, Scarlett to share with the class. How exciting…for all of us!
Next week is Halloween week. Some of our classes are off to the pumpkin patch, others to Redwood Park. On Friday, our primary students will be enjoying a Halloween dance just for them. All students will be participating in our Halloween costume walk. Enjoy your weekend everyone!
It was election week at Pacific Heights. Students in many classes have been learning about the democratic process and elections were held at the school. Everyone is excited to hear what the results are this week! We also had our October assembly where we recognized all students having birthdays for September and October. A group of student leaders presented the buddy bench to the school and we saw our first instalment of Pacific Heights Student News!
Rehea preparing student ballots.
Lara placing her ballot in the ballot box.
Oliver greets our students every morning from just outside the gate.
Trinity completed a plane in class on Friday morning. She said that every week students are given the tools to build something with little teacher direction. Students have to use all their problem solving skills to be successful on their own. Last week students had to make a cardboard shoe that could actually be worn by one of their group members.
This is our buddy bench. A buddy bench is a place where students go can if they are in need of someone to play with. Students have been asked to keep an eye on the bench and invite anyone they see there to play.
On Monday, Pacific Heights is a federal election polling station. Some of our classes may take the opportunity to peek in the gym and see the process in action. Interim reports/portfolio highlights will be coming home on Monday. Friday is a Provincial Pro-D Day. On this day teachers have opportunities all over the Province for learning.
What an incredible fall this has been. We have been so fortunate to have seen the sun all September. Our grounds are beautiful at this time with all the leaves turning red and gold. Our students have been outside every day playing soccer, basketball, exploring the playgrounds and digging in the dirt. Great fun!
This week we had a performance by Dumpsta Dragons. They share music and instruments from around the world, including ones made from recycled materials. Great inspiration for Maker Faire later this year.

Our Harvest Day Hoedown was great fun. We had a great turn out of parents and grandparents. Dancing, laughing, singing and an amazing display of “veggie” creations. What artists we have! Who knew you could turn a pineapple into an owl?!

Last week we students participated in the great shoreline cleanup. This week Harjyn and Aodan were busy tallying the results.
Our students cleared the beach of:
9946 cigarette butts
3200 food wrappers
120 plastic caps
and a lot of other garbage. Thank you students!
This was a fun week cumulating with Harvest Day. A wonderful tradition! I hope all of our students, staff and families have a restful, safe weekend. Enjoy the turkey! Happy Thanksgiving!
This week was both fun and feel good for our students! Book Fair started this week and we kicked it off with “Dress As Your Favourite Book Character”. Our students were incredibly creative with their costumes. On Thursday, students from many of our classes participated in Shoreline Cleanup. Students, teachers, parents and grand-parents headed down to White Rock beach and cleaned up the shore. What a great feeling to have made such a difference!
